Softball Rebuilds From Award Winning Legacy
The 2011 and 2012 District Ten champions girls softball team from Fairview High School enter the 2013 season with not the goals of a returning champion but perhaps more of a restructuring of the lineup. With much noted success in the past season, the tiger softball program has much enjoyed “basking in the glow” of gold medals, but as the team saw many key players graduate at the end of last year it is back to the drawing board for this 2013 season. Limiting their opponents to only scoring one run a game for two-years straight, the girls hold an overall record of 48-2 for the two year span. Having the most athletic and outstanding…
Bucknell Bound
This is it. Our swim team is preparing to defend their title at the State Championship swim meet at Bucknell University. Not only do the members of the team have their own pressures and crazy emotions, but they have the added pressure to protect their state name. After losing significant members of the team, it may seem unbelievable to do as well as they have in the past, but this team knows just what they can do to make a statement at this championship. Both boys and girls teams are capable to stepping up to their full potential. With 6 relays and 9 people competing in individual events, the team plans to do the best…
Fairview Hosts Cheerleading Districts
On January 26th, Fairview High School will become the host of Pennsylvania’s first district ten competition for interscholastic competitive spirit squads. There will be nine other schools from the district attempting to cheer, flip, and stunt their way to the district champion title. Fairview senior cheerleader Gabby Gette will be competing in Fairview’s squad and is confident in her team’s chances of winning. Gette has been a key member of the Fairview varsity cheerleading squad for four years, as well as competing in levels four and five of CheerVibe, a local cheerleading company that she has been involved in since age nine. Gette has also participated in gymnastics since she was just three years old,…
Fairview Swimming 2013
Last school year, the Fairview Swimming and Diving teams made history. Both the girls and boys team placed first in the District 10 meet, and advanced many swimmers to the state competition. Not only did the boys swim team and diver Danny Roberts become state champions, but multiple school, district, and state records were broken in the process. The girl’s team had a season to remember as well, placing twelfth in the state. This year, the boy’s swim team but will have to replace four-time All-American and state record holder diver Danny Roberts and multiple state record holders, including the foursome of Harrison Grimm, Alex Borowski, Carl Nerthling, and RJ Petrella. Don’t count the boys’…
Football Playoffs: Pride in Fairview’s Team
Last season, the Fairview football players had a rough turn-out. After only winning one game, the team was determined to make this fall into a winning season, and now, it seems that the Tigers have achieved their goal. The Tiger’s record has improved tremendously, and they have a record of 6 wins and three loses, and have even advanced to the playoffs. In fact, this Saturday, November 10, the Fairview football players face off against the Wilmington Greyhounds in their first playoff game in two years. A loss will stop the team from advancing farther into the playoffs, and as a result, it is imperative that the Tigers strive to defeat the Greyhounds. The Tigers…
Gone Too Far
After the disappointing news that the Fairview boys’ soccer team would not make it to the District 10 playoffs, the D-10 committee reversed their decision, granting the team a play-in game tonight against Kennedy Catholic. The news was greeted with much jubilation by both the soccer team and the Fairview community, as this welcomed decision was, according to statistical standings, much deserved. As the news traveled around the county, the social networking scene was abuzz with comments regarding the situation. Expectedly, the Fairview community and students were elated and trilled to represent the Tigers in yet another soccer game. However, others across the district failed to see the value in healthy competition.
In a continuation of…
Racism: Marring the Beautiful Game
I am a senior midfielder on the varsity soccer team, and am the kicker for the football team. I’m involved in the Photography Club, the Green Team, Spanish Club, an editor for the school newspaper, photographer for the yearbook, and am a member of NHS. And yes, I am a Mexican-American. Until recently, my ethnicity has never gotten in the way of my education and my personal life, nor has it been a hindrance on the sports field. I hoped that would be the case for my high school experience however, my “hopeful” world was pushed into an unexpected and unwelcome reality in the blink of an eye.
On Monday, October 1st, the boys’ soccer team played…
Administration Coaching
Choosing and Observing our Coaches
Behind every sports team in Fairview High is a coach. The quality of that coach can either make or break the team’s foundation and success as a whole. Good coaches lead to champion teams, yet bad coaches can be the source of a team’s downfall. When choosing and observing a coach, it is up to the athletic department and administration to decide the perfect candidate for the job.
Mr. Jerry Lightner, Fairview’s athletic director, is the deciding factor as to who is acceptable to coach our tigers. In order to indentify the most suitable candidate for the position, Lightner questions each applicant on their potential as a coach for Fairview High.
“I want…
Fairview Athletes Nominated
Every week on the GoErie website, their Varsity section holds an “Athlete of the Week” competition which lists many top athletes from each of the fall sports and creates a poll to vote for the favorite. Students from many schools around the area are listed and receive hundreds of votes throughout the process.
This week, many Fairview students were up for the honor in their respected categories. Junior Shannon Jackson was up for “Football Athlete of the Week”, freshman Antonia Piazza competed for “Female Soccer Player of the Week”, and junior Mac Tompkins competed for “Male Soccer Player of the Week. “
Polls closed for voting last night. With the results coming in today, Jackson and Piazza…
Coaching in Question?
The mechanics of a great coach can be defined in themselves, through their administration, and their athletes. This article is the first of a three part series on the perspective of coaches at the high school level.
It is said that a coach can make or break a team. Coaches provide mental support while also providing the physical techniques that an athlete needs to succeed. A good coach will create a positive atmosphere for their athletes resulting in increased performance and a solid team. However, coaches that to do not help their athletes to success will lead to a decrease in performance, breaking the team’s unity.
Coaches can either bring a team together or pull them apart. …
